Purpose of Trip

Fish count lower Thunder to DL-7

details:      There were two BIO counts made.

#1. From the new ladder location to DL-7

    #2. DL-7

#1. There were 78- Small fish & 8- Large fish for a total count of 86-fish to DL-7

        1- Grotto Salamander

        59- Isopods

        9- Bats all flying

    #2. IT'S ALIVE! DL-7

        7-Small fish & 4- Large for a total count of 11- fish

        1- Grotto salamander

This was a quick look survey. 2000ft. or a little past where DL-7 Tee's

        Combined counts - 97 fish

                        - 2 grotto salamanders

                        - 59 isopods

                        - 9 bats

For those of you who like time tables.

    45 Min. to DR-1

    DR-1 to Blackrock ripples - 1hr.45min.

Blackrock ripples to Eroded formations on left bank - 50min.

    Eroded formations to DL-7 2hr.15min.

New ladder location To - DR-1 45min.

                       - Blackrock ripples 1hr.45min.

                       - Eroded formations left bank 2hr.35min.

                       - DL-7 4hr.45min.

This was the second count down stream  to DL-7. The first was combined with an upstream count to the round room. Near 100 fish was counted on that combined trip. This trip down stream alone 97 fish were counted   -- WOW --

We started by measuring a ladder location down stream from thunder falls. You will go above the falls to the ladder. Not to the side of the falls where the rope ladder is now. Bill Gee is working on this project.

#1  We found 3 fish between new ladder location and DR-1. 21 fish to blackrock ripples and 1 grotto salamander. Eric found 2 salamanders.  One here and one in DL-7. Bill counted 23 isopods in a sample survey. at blackrock ripples. There were 9 bats counted to this point. all were flying. It's hard to count flying bats so 9+or-. We didn't see any bats past this point.

At the lip of horseshoe falls Bill took another sample survey for isopods 5ft.x5ft. He found 36. this would be a good spot for a BIO station. We found 86 fish total to DL-7.

If going up river or down Carroll is difficult for you. Think twice about a downstream thunder trip.( It's never easy ). On the way down we found a 5gal. bucket and a potato bag full of trash. we carried them out as far as the back door. Hopefully they were pulled out when the surveyors left the cave. If not there is a bucket at the back door that needs to come out. Remember leave only footprints take only pictures.

    #2.  ---- IT'S A.L.I.V.E. ----  DL-7 LIVES !!!

We did a quick check for life and found 11 fish and 1 grotto salamander. Our guess is we went in as far as 2000ft.We pasted the Tee and headed north for a short distance. It was long and hard getting there and back but well worth it. There is an old reflector on top of a mound. you will see it when you get there. this is where it Tee's. left goes south and straight goes north. If you want any more info. about DL-7 contact anyone of us. WE WERE THERE.
