Purpose of Trip To mark trail up river to mapped end

details:

Sunday 7-27-03 the day after the one year Anniversary Meeting, Fireworks & Picnic, we went on a upstream trail marking trip.

We were in the hole and ready to go at 10:25 AM. We were just slow getting started and missed our 8:00 entry time. At 11:50 we took a short break near some mud writing. [At] 12:30 we had lunch at the round room. It took us two hours to get there.

Between the backdoor and the Round Room we found - Writing on a mud bank (far as we go Nov 10 56). -A rock with (Mak (H0,40?)62 Boyer Carlton). -A Carabid (ground) beetle. Page 32 bottom photo Mo.cave life booklet.  It was definitely the beetle in the photo.  The booklet goes on to say they are only found in four caves in eastern Mo. (Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve counties). They can add another cave and county in central Mo. to there list.  On this trip one was discovered in Carroll.

Past the round room the cave really changes. Lots of breakdown and little stream passage.  The trail we marked is a BIG time saver. There were places that took some looking to find the best way. There are several Cairns along the way. We marked a good trail but I think it is taking away from the trip.  Following the white reflective rood [good?]. The Cairns might be enough past the round room. Not for me to say.

WE passed another Cairn - C.S.L. - SLUG - RA. This cairn is on the old map.  Past this formations, soda straws, become more frequent [and] the cave gets much HARDER! ! !  Jumps, Climbs, Loose rocks, Breakdown, Stepovers, ect. the chance of injury increases here.  After stepping across Thunder River 5' up we climbed up and over to a jump probably 25' up. Just on the other side of this is a Cairn that says (End of map S.L.U.G. 11-25-61)  This is not the end of mapped passage. I think we were just short of the collasped dome [and] at that cairn we stopped. It was 3:05 PM.

It took us 3 hours and five minutes to get back to the backdoor.  Carried out some carbide out of the round room. Not all of it. There is still some there that needs to be brought out.  Picked up a little trash. Not much.  We were out of the cave at 6:30 - 6:45 PM.

One more time if you go past the round room be prepared the cave gets HARDER.

THANK YOU Dan, Pam, Ken, Bryon- hard core cavers

Jeff Page was there and couldn't make our trip he helped on a thank you trip instead.  Everyone on the trip request was there.

Proud to be C.C.C. Andy Isbell
