T-Junction
Dig 12
11/17/01 and 11/18/01
Only 86.08' to go!
Diggers: Bernhard Arnold, John Bowles, Bill Copeland, Jeremy Eaton, Ryan
Freeman, Tim Fuller, Earl Hancock, Lannis Hancock, Rick Hines, Andy Isbel, Tom
Lounsbury, Dave McCool, Jeff Page, Eddie Simmons, Marsha Walker, Chris Wolters
Correction: Regan Youngman was a digger on the prior dig, 11/03/01.
Five blasts were completed. The depth gained was 7.35 feet for an
average of 1.47 feet per blast. We expected a larger pull per blast since
the holes were drilled to about 2' 4". We will make adjustments to
the explosive loading and stemming to try to improve the pull next week.
On Sunday we did three blasts on our own, without direct assistance form
our friends from Rolla. Everything went smoothly.
We appreciate the help of old friends and new participants. Earl and
Lannis Hancock, who have been helpful in the past, attended their first
T-Junction dig. Their fellow MVG member, Marsha Walker, helped at her
first Carroll dig. Tim Fuller and Dave McCool not only attended their
first dig but also joined the CCC. Dave does drilling and blasting for a
living. We very much appreciated him sharing his experience with us.
Dave may bring a pneumatic drill from his company for us to experiment with next
week. Dave demonstrated a new technique for operating the drill.
Sometime after midnight near the end of his three hour shift in the hole we
observed him sitting on the drill with his feet up while it was operating!
After a late night some of us got up at 3:30 AM to watch the Leonid Meteor
Shower.
We used the CCC compressor for the first time. Minor oil leaks were
fixed and the idle mechanism was repaired and adjusted. Thanks to Kerry
Rowland for getting it to run and to Chris Wolters for pulling it to the dig.
Thanks to Danny Schupbach for the loan of his compressor while we were trying to
get ours to work.
Next Dig will be Saturday and Sunday, 11/24 and 11/25. Please call
or email as early as possible to sign up for next weekend or any future weekend.
Last Wednesday it looked like we would be very short on help but by Friday I was
turning people away. Please sign up early so we can be assured of having
the appropriate crew on hand each week.

Paul,
Ryan, John
Thanks for letting us fly on our own Sunday.
We
had a great variability in the drill time this weekend.
From 3 minutes for one hole to over an hour for one hole.
The total drilling time for six holes follows.
Blast
10 2 hr 42 min
11 4 hr
12 50 min
(3 and 4 minutes on some holes)
13 1 hr 12 min
14 Part of one hole drilled
(2 feet 30 minutes)
Equipment
and operators are variables that impact the time but the rock seems to be the
main variable.
The
biggest disappointment this week was the low pull that average only 1.47 feet
when the holes were about 2.5 feet. The
numbers are in the attached files. The good news is that everything flowed down
the 9 inch hole with no problem.
We
will be back for another round next Saturday and Sunday.
