Backdoor Work and Board Meeting

October 12, 2002

Workers: John Bowles, Terry DeFraties, Rick Hines, Andy Isbell, Kathy Sumner, Aaron White
Board meeting attendees in addition to the above:  Ed Simmons, Marty Griffin, Rose Shaw, Carl Wagner

Prior to the weekend it became obvious that we would not have enough workers scheduled for Sunday to operate the elevator for chipping the shaft.  The work weekend became a work day.

The first task accomplished Saturday was the measurement of the distance from the shaft to the two seismograph locations that were used to monitor the blasting process.  Terry and John rappelled in, got the measurements, and were out in about 20 minutes.  The information was needed for a paper.  The paper, "Blasting a New Entrance to Carroll Cave", by John Bowles, Paul Worsey, Ryan Freeman, Rick Hines, Dave McCool and Chris Wolters will be presented at the Seventh Mid-America Blasting Conference, November 6, 2002, at Lake Ozark.

The next order of business was a CCC Board meeting where revisions to the access policy and the membership policy were approved.  Jeff Page and Bill Copeland were elected to the board bringing the total board member count to 9. The full minutes of the board meeting are available on the web at www.CarrollCave.org.

While you are on the web take a look at the videos of the breakthrough weekend at www.caves.com.

Ed delivered the Hertz pneumatic chisel, but unfortunately, without a chisel bit.  Carl and Ed traveled to Osage Beach to find a rental shop with a chisel.  With a late start and an early stop due to rain we only got in a few hours of chipping but progress was made.

The last item on the agenda was to take photos of the sidewall of the shaft to aid Morris Hall's geology study.  We lowered a tape measure down from the top of the 42" culvert to provide a reference for the photos.  I attached a wide-angle lens and external flash to my digital camera and started down.  Whistle codes were established so that Terry could lower me on the elevator and stop at the right level.  The wide-angle lens gave me a little more than 2 feet of coverage.  The plan was to take pictures every two feet and then stitch them together to form a continuous picture from the top to the bottom of the shaft.  Well, to try to put a positive spin on the effort we can say it was a learning experience.  I took photos down to 44' before water became more of a problem than my plastic bag could handle.  Also with the camera held back as far as possible I could not see the view panel.  Stitching individual shots together did not wo! rk since the tape moved relative to the wall for each shot and the stitching program tries to line up the tape between photos and not the rocks.  I'll work on a better umbrella system for next time.  (Photo from 16' attached)

Please sign up for one or more of the following work weekends.  We need a minimum crew of 5 people for each day.  We need to complete the shaft work before we can move on to the ladder, airlocks, and entrance building.
